Water Heater Age Decoder
Rheem water heater age from the serial number
The manufacture date and age of a Rheem water heater, read character by character from Rheem's own date-code document.
How a Rheem Serial Carries the Date
On the older digits-first label the serial is ten characters: two digits of month, two digits of year, a plant line code letter, then a five digit sequence. From April 2012, plant by plant, the label changed to a plant letter followed by two digits of week, two digits of year and the sequence, with an optional conversion letter at the end. The rating label pictured in the bulletin carries a product prefix in front of the plant letter, so the tool reads the plant letter as the last letter before the digits.
| Format | Layout | When |
|---|---|---|
| Rheem / Ruud / Richmond, older digits-first rating label | MM YY + plant line code letter + 5 digit sequence (10 characters) | The format used until that plant's Oracle changeover, which began April 2012 and ran plant by plant |
| Rheem / Ruud / Richmond, 2012-onward rating label | Optional product prefix + plant letter + WW + YY + 5 digit sequence (+ conversion suffix) | April 2012 onward, per plant as each migrated to Oracle |

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I tell how old my Rheem water heater is from the serial number?
On the older digits-first label the serial is ten characters: two digits of month, two digits of year, a plant line code letter, then a five digit sequence. From April 2012, plant by plant, the label changed to a plant letter followed by two digits of week, two digits of year and the sequence, with an optional conversion letter at the end. The rating label pictured in the bulletin carries a product prefix in front of the plant letter, so the tool reads the plant letter as the last letter before the digits. Enter the serial in the decoder on this page and it shows the date, the age and which characters it read, or says why this serial cannot be resolved to one date.
Which documents is the Rheem decode read from?
"How to Locate and Read Rheem/Ruud/Richmond Serial Numbers", published by Rheem; Rheem's copy is served by the Rheem document CDN (cdn.globalimageserver.com). The same bulletin covers Ruud and Richmond, so their serials read the same way.
How do I check the warranty on a Rheem water heater?
Rheem's own warranty verification is at rheem.registermyunit.com, linked from www.rheem.com. Rheem's warranties page says: "If you’ve already registered your Rheem product and would like to verify your warranty terms and coverage, your serial number is required." Its form asks for the serial, the homeowner's last name and the homeowner's state. This tool does not read the maker's records, so it cannot show this tank's warranty or whether it was registered.
