Checked
Every figure an Intry calculator computes comes from a locked source module, not hand-typed. 32786 automated checks, one suite for the whole site rather than a per-tool count, re-derive the numbers before each deploy from the tables this site holds, read from the cited NEC section. This is our own deterministic gate, not a third-party audit.

Your AHJ and local amendments have final say. Confirm before rough-in.

Copy for job notes gives the checklist with a box beside each line. Save it to a job and the panel schedule can add its required circuits as rows; the job's PDF packet prints the checklist.

Required circuits5

Cited against NFPA 70, the 2020, 2023 and 2026 editions, 210.8, 210.11(C), 210.12 and 210.52 (and 422.5 in 2020). A state, city or county can amend these rules; your inspector has the final word.

How to use the rough-in checklist

  1. Pick the code. Choose your state to set the NEC edition its record names, or choose 2020, 2023 or 2026 yourself, and pick the kind of dwelling.
  2. Enter the rooms. Add each room: a hallway with its length along the centerline, a foyer with its floor area, a garage with its bays, and any room in a basement marked In a basement.
  3. Read each room. Each room lists its GFCI, AFCI and receptacle lines, each with its section; the whole dwelling adds the required circuits and the outdoor rules.
  4. Take it to the job. Copy for job notes gives the checklist with a box beside each line; Save files it under a job, and the panel schedule can add its required circuits.

A distance, not a count

210.52(A) sets how far any point on a wall may be from a receptacle outlet, not how many a room gets. Doorways, fireplaces and fixed cabinets break a wall into separate wall spaces, so the checklist gives the distances and leaves the count to the layout. The counts it does give are the code's own: one per garage vehicle bay, one in a hallway of 10 ft or more, and one in each wall space 3 ft or wider in a foyer over 60 sq ft.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which rooms need GFCI protection in a house?

Under NEC 2023 210.8(A), every 125-volt through 250-volt receptacle on a single-phase circuit of 150 volts or less to ground in bathrooms, garages, outdoors, crawl spaces at or below grade, basements, kitchens, areas with a sink and permanent provisions for food or drink preparation or cooking, boathouses, laundry areas and indoor damp and wet locations, and any receptacle within 6 ft of a sink's bowl or of a bathtub or shower stall. 210.8(D) adds, wherever in the dwelling it is installed, the branch circuit or outlet supplying an appliance it lists that is rated 150 volts or less to ground and 60 amperes or less: automotive vacuum machines, drinking water coolers and bottle fill stations, high-pressure spray washing machines, tire inflation machines, vending machines, sump pumps, dishwashers, electric ranges, wall-mounted ovens, counter-mounted cooking units, clothes dryers and microwave ovens. 210.8(A) prints exceptions, among them a receptacle supplying only a permanently installed premises security system; the checklist lists each room's lines with its cite and the exceptions for the whole dwelling.

Which rooms need AFCI protection?

NEC 2023 210.12(B) covers the 120-volt, 10, 15 and 20 A branch circuits supplying outlets or devices in kitchens, family rooms, dining rooms, living rooms, parlors, libraries, dens, bedrooms, sunrooms, recreation rooms, closets, hallways, laundry areas and similar areas. Bathrooms, garages, basements and outdoors are not on the list. An individual branch circuit supplying a fire alarm system, installed in the wiring methods 210.12's exception names, is excepted. The 2020 edition, 210.12(A), names the same rooms for 15 and 20 A circuits.

How many circuits does a kitchen need?

At least two 20-ampere small-appliance circuits for its countertop receptacles, and no small-appliance circuit may serve more than one kitchen (210.11(C)(1) and 210.52(B)(3)). They also serve the kitchen's wall and floor receptacles, the refrigerator's, and those of the dining room, pantry and breakfast room, and they have no other outlets, except a clock receptacle or one powering a gas range's, oven's or cooktop's supplemental equipment and lighting (210.52(B)(2)). In addition to the required receptacles, one for a specific appliance, such as the refrigerator, may have its own circuit of 15 amperes or more (210.52(B)(1) Exception No. 2). The checklist also says which appliance circuits need GFCI.

How far apart do receptacles have to be?

In a living room, bedroom, kitchen and the other rooms 210.52(A) names, no point along the floor line of any wall space may be more than 6 ft from a receptacle outlet, and a wall space is any space 2 ft or wider. On a countertop 12 in or wider, no point along the wall line may be more than 24 in from one (210.52(C)(1)). The checklist states these distances; it does not turn a wall's length into a count, because doorways and fixed cabinets decide where each wall space starts and ends.

What did the 2023 NEC change for kitchens?

The 2020 edition's kitchen GFCI item reaches only the receptacles that serve the countertop surfaces (210.8(A)(6)); the 2023 and 2026 items reach every kitchen receptacle. The 2020 appliance rule (210.8(D) and 422.5(A)) lists dishwashers and sump pumps among its seven appliances; the 2023 and 2026 210.8(D) also lists electric ranges, wall-mounted ovens, counter-mounted cooking units, clothes dryers and microwave ovens. Pick the edition at the top of the checklist to see each.

Does it apply my state's amendments?

No. Pick your state and the checklist shows its record from the NEC adoption page and, where the state's adopting documents amend 210.8, 210.11, 210.12 or 210.52, names those sections and says the lines are the NEC text without the amendment. Some states change where GFCI and AFCI apply (Idaho by room, Iowa for the whole one- or two-family dwelling), so read the amendment or ask your inspector. City and county amendments are not read here.

Does it put the circuits on the panel schedule?

Yes. Save the checklist to a job, open the panel schedule, and Add from your saved jobs adds each required circuit as a 20 A row and shows any state check the checklist carries as it adds them. The rows leave the wire and the load for you to enter, because the checklist sizes no conductor and states no load.
