HVAC Serial Number Lookup
Coleman Serial Number Lookup
Coleman is part of the York / Johnson Controls family, alongside Fraser-Johnston, Guardian, Luxaire, York. Enter the serial from the data plate below to get the manufacture date with a character-by-character explanation, the unit's age, its refrigerant era, and the warranty picture.
Starting the decoder. The serial formats, the refrigerant timeline and the warranty terms further down this page are already loaded, so you can read yours off them now.
7 of the 41 decode rules rest on a single secondary reference. Where two agree, that is weaker evidence than it looks: secondary references copy one another, and agreement between two is not a manufacturer document being read. These rules rest on secondary references rather than on a document from the company that built the unit. Where two or more cover the same format we cross-check them against each other. A date stamped or printed on the data plate always outranks a serial decode.

Coleman Serial Number Formats
| Format | Era | Example | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Letter + digit + letter + digit + 6-digit sequence; the two digits read together are the year, the second letter is the month (A to N, skipping I and J)Cross-checked across 3 secondary references, not a manufacturer document. | October 2004 to present | W1G7123456 = July 2017 | high |
| 4 letters + 6 digits; second letter = month, third letter = year on a 21-year cycleCross-checked across 3 secondary references, not a manufacturer document. | 1971 to October 2004 | YHFM321456 = August 1997 | high |
Some older or conflicting Coleman formats are recognized but deliberately not decoded; the decoder explains why when it sees one instead of guessing.
Worked Example: Coleman W1G7123456
Expected decode: July 2017, Wichita KS plant. Character by character:
W = plant code (Wichita KS)
1 and 7 = year digits read together: 2017
G = July (month letters A to N, I and J skipped)
123456 = production sequence
Coleman Refrigerant Timeline
| Manufacture year | Typical refrigerant | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| through 2005 | R-22 | Standard refrigerant of the era. EPA ended U.S. production and import of R-22 on January 1, 2020; an existing system can still be serviced with recycled, reclaimed or previously produced R-22. |
| 2006 to 2009 | R-22 or R-410A | Overlap window as JCI lines transitioned to R-410A. |
| 2010 to 2024 | R-410A | From January 1, 2010, EPA allowed new R-22 to be produced or imported only for use in equipment manufactured before that date; R-410A was the standard through 2024. |
| 2025 and later | R-454B | JCI chose R-454B for York, Luxaire, Coleman, Fraser-Johnston, and Guardian ducted residential, with production from 2024-2025 onward. |
The refrigerant printed on the nameplate is authoritative; this timeline tells you what is typical for the age, not what is in a specific unit.
Coleman Warranty Terms
Coleman warranty lookup
No page of Coleman's own for looking up a warranty is linked here, and this page does not read any maker's records, so it cannot show whether a unit was registered.
What this page works out is the next question. Enter the serial in the lookup on this page and the result works out the parts term the Coleman warranty certificates held here print for that build date, naming the edition and quoting its clause, or says plainly why it cannot and what would answer it. It asks only for answers that would change a line it shows, each naming the line it moves, and a Service Brief carries the result to whoever works on the unit.
One U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice this tool matches names Coleman equipment. Where the serial and model entered meet, or may meet, a notice's printed conditions, the result shows that notice first, with CPSC's own hazard and remedy, and compares each condition; where a notice lists models and none was entered, it asks for the model, unless something else entered or read from the serial rules the unit out of that notice. It never says a unit is or is not recalled, and it says nothing when nothing entered meets or may meet one.
The Coleman warranty terms held here
10 York family air conditioner and heat pump warranty certificate editions covering Coleman are held here, from 813196-UUM-E-0314 (March 2014, by its form suffix) to 6783352-UUM-A-0626 (June 2026, by its form suffix). Every one prints a base parts term of 5 years for its residential row. Each gives 10 years if registered within 90 days (813196-UUM-E-0314 to 6783352-UUM-A-0626), except on the models an edition excepts. How the term starts changed between editions: first at registration, or at shipment when no registration is on record; later at installation only (no start counted from manufacture is printed). Every one ties its terms to the original owner; 6783352-UUM-A-0626 (June 2026, by its form suffix) prints: "This Limited Warranty extends only to the Buyer and is non-transferable." It also prints: "In some states or provinces, the limited warranty is available at no charge to a subsequent owner/homeowner if the product has been used solely for the original residential application. To determine whether your limited warranty is transferrable to a subsequent homeowner (subject to a transfer fee) please contact Manufacturer at 1-877-874-7378." 813196-UUM-E-0314, 1183508-UUM-L-0818, 1183508-UUM-O-0121 print a lifetime compressor term with its own conditions; no compressor end is worked out here. None pays for labour.
Enter the serial above: where held editions are dated both before and after the build and agree, the result works out the base parts term from the build date and the dated windows, each with the edition it rests on; where not, it says so and names what would answer it. Only the maker's records show whether a unit was registered.
Source: the maker's own limited warranty certificates, each identified by the part number printed on it; the serial result names the edition every line comes from.
Frequently Asked Questions
How old is my Coleman unit?
Decode the serial number from the data plate. The dominant Coleman format (October 2004 to present) is: Letter + digit + letter + digit + 6-digit sequence; the two digits read together are the year, the second letter is the month (A to N, skipping I and J). Example: W1G7123456 decodes to July 2017, Wichita KS plant. Subtract the decoded year from the current year for the age.
Which brands share the Coleman serial number format?
Coleman is part of the York / Johnson Controls family, alongside Fraser-Johnston, Guardian, Luxaire, and York. These brands come off shared production lines with the same data plates, so this page's serial number formats apply across the family. The refrigerant timeline above is stated for the whole family, not per brand. The warranty section above is this brand's own.
Has the Coleman serial decode been checked against serials somebody else dated?
York/JCI modern (letter-digit-letter-digit): Read against 6 serials where a public body's own equipment schedule prints a year beside the serial (Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Wayne Township, New Jersey; the year sits under a column headed Year on 4, and in a row labelled Year Manufactured on 2, 4 of which the document does not define): 5 matched the reading shown first, 1 did not match any reading (the published year ran earlier than this tool's reading); and 1 serial where a seller entered a year in the listing's own year field on a government surplus listing for the serial (government surplus auction listings), ZEO48H12B4A1AAA1A1 rooftop unit: 1 did not match any reading (the published year ran later than this tool's reading); a seller's year is shown here for the record and is not counted toward this format's check.
York/JCI legacy (4 letters + 6 digits): Checked against 2 serials whose date a recall notice published by someone other than us states (CPSC recall notice 00-003), Diamond 80 downflow mid-efficiency furnaces. The date this tool reads first was consistent with the published window on all 2. Also read against 7 serials where a public body's own equipment schedule prints a year beside the serial (Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Wayne Township, New Jersey; the year sits under a column headed Year on 4, and in a row labelled Year Manufactured on 3, 4 of which the document does not define): 7 matched the reading shown first.
Across the Coleman formats on this page, 2 serials with a date published outside this tool produced no reading at all (Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; government surplus auction listings). A serial this tool reads nothing from is neither an agreement nor a disagreement, so it is counted in neither.
Where someone outside this tool wrote down a different year for a unit, that year is shown here rather than dropped. It is that publisher's record for the unit, and a schedule or a listing can carry a replacement, system or lot year rather than the build year. The MFG DATE on the unit's data plate is the build date.
What refrigerant does a Coleman unit use?
By manufacture year: through 2005: R-22; 2006 to 2009: R-22 or R-410A; 2010 to 2024: R-410A; 2025 and later: R-454B. The refrigerant printed on the nameplate is authoritative; the year-based mapping tells you what is typical for the age, not what is in a specific unit.
How do I look up my Coleman warranty?
No page of Coleman's own for looking up a warranty is linked here, and this page does not read any maker's records, so it cannot show whether a unit was registered. What this page works out is the next question.

Why do some Coleman serial numbers refuse to decode?
Coleman units from before the York/JCI era (Coleman Evcon, 1990s) carry Evcon serials that do not follow this scheme, and this tool holds no source it can decode them from. This serial has York's legacy four-letter layout, and every date that layout's letter cycle gives it falls before March 1995. York International's Form 10-K for fiscal 1996 states: "On March 1, 1995, the Company acquired all of the capital stock of Evcon Holdings, Inc." It also states: "Evcon sells residential systems under the "COLEMAN EVCON", "RED T", "GUARDIAN" and "AIRPRO" brands." This tool holds no Evcon serial document, and it reads a serial in York's own layout on a Coleman unit as one built under York, from March 1995 on. So no date is read from it here. Read the manufacture date off the data plate.
How old is my Coleman furnace?
No maker document held here dates Coleman furnaces, so the tool does not call a date a Coleman furnace's age; it reads the serial by the same rule it uses for Coleman's other equipment.
