HVAC Serial Number Lookup

American Standard Serial Number Lookup: AC and Furnace Age

American Standard is part of the Trane family, alongside Ameristar, Trane. Enter the serial from the data plate below to get the manufacture date with a character-by-character explanation, the unit's age, its refrigerant era, and the warranty picture.

Quick answer: American Standard serial numbers (2009 to present): 10+ characters starting with 2 digits; digits 1-2 = year, digits 3-4 = week. Example: 11241KADBB = week 24 of 2011. The same rule covers Trane and Ameristar.

Starting the decoder. The serial formats, the refrigerant timeline and the warranty terms further down this page are already loaded, so you can read yours off them now.

Every serial format on this page is read from a document published by the company that built the unit, held as a retained copy. The manufacturer's document "Residential & Light Commercial Product Handbook: Equipment Date Identification", which says accessories and some coils "may have only three digits to indicate date code". A date stamped or printed on the data plate always outranks a serial decode.

Some older or conflicting American Standard formats are recognized but deliberately not decoded; the decoder explains why when it sees one instead of guessing.

Worked Example: American Standard 11241KADBB

Expected decode: week 24 of 2011. Character by character:

Week 24 of 2011 (about June)

11 = year 2011 (digits 1-2)

24 = week 24 (digits 3-4)

1 = day of the week (digit 5, per Trane's own date code page)

Cross-check: the ANSI rating year on the data plate should equal or slightly precede this year.

American Standard Refrigerant Timeline

Manufacture yearTypical refrigerantNotes
through 2005R-22Standard refrigerant of the era. EPA ended U.S. production and import of R-22 on January 1, 2020; an existing system can still be serviced with recycled, reclaimed or previously produced R-22.
2006 to 2009R-22 or R-410ATransition window: both 2TT (R-22) and 4TT (R-410A) lines sold. The model prefix, not the year, is authoritative here.
2010 to 2024R-410AFrom January 1, 2010, EPA allowed new R-22 to be produced or imported only for use in equipment manufactured before that date; R-410A was the standard through 2024. Trane model prefix 4.
2025 and laterR-454BTrane began releasing R-454B equipment during 2024; from January 1, 2025 essentially all Trane/American Standard residential product is R-454B (model prefix 5). Data plate governs on 2024 builds.

The refrigerant printed on the nameplate is authoritative; this timeline tells you what is typical for the age, not what is in a specific unit.

This page reads no maker's records and cannot show whether a unit was registered. Open American Standard's own warranty lookup

Enter the serial in the lookup on this page for the build date and the unit's age. No American Standard warranty certificate is held here for a dated term, so the result dates no term, says so, and names what would answer it; a Service Brief carries what is known to whoever works on the unit.

5 U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notices this tool matches name American Standard equipment. Where the serial and model entered meet, or may meet, a notice's printed conditions, the result shows that notice first, with CPSC's own hazard and remedy, and compares each condition; where a notice lists models and none was entered, it asks for the model, unless something else entered or read from the serial rules the unit out of that notice. It never says a unit is or is not recalled, and it says nothing when nothing entered meets or may meet one.

What this tool holds on American Standard's warranty

Trane and American Standard certificate GW-658-0119, for products made from January 1, 2017 (held here as text), extends its base terms on the products its tables list, up to ten years on parts and, on some series (outdoor 4TTX, 4TTV, 4TWX, 4TWV, 4A6H7, 4A6V, 4A7A7 and 4A7V, and packaged 4WCZ6, 4DCZ6 and 4YCZ6), twelve on the compressor, when the product is registered online within sixty days after the commencement date. Its base terms differ by product: some outdoor units, including its R-22 models, and the ductless systems it marks as sold in Canada only print one year. Where the installation and start-up date cannot be verified by the installer's invoice, the term starts sixty days after the factory manufacture date.

The result does not work out a dated term for American Standard: no American Standard certificate is registered for that here. Only the maker's records show whether a unit was registered.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old is my American Standard unit?

Decode the serial number from the data plate. The dominant American Standard format (2009 to present) is: 10+ characters starting with 2 digits; digits 1-2 = year, digits 3-4 = week. Example: 11241KADBB decodes to week 24 of 2011. Subtract the decoded year from the current year for the age.

Which brands share the American Standard serial number format?

American Standard is part of the Trane family, alongside Ameristar and Trane. These brands come off shared production lines with the same data plates, so this page's serial number formats apply across the family. The refrigerant timeline above is stated for the whole family, not per brand. The warranty section above is this brand's own.

Has the American Standard serial decode been checked against serials somebody else dated?

Trane two-digit year (2009-present): Checked against 7 serials whose date a recall notice published by someone other than us states (CPSC recall notice 17-709, CPSC recall notice 25-369), 5 of them gas/electric packaged units, models 4YCZ50xx, across 2 equipment types. The date this tool reads first was consistent with the published window on all 7. Also read against 22 serials where a public body's own equipment schedule prints a year beside the serial (Winter Park, Florida; Norcross, Georgia; Wayne Township, New Jersey; the year sits under a column headed Year on 21, and in a row labelled Year Manufactured on 1, 21 of which the document does not define), 21 name an equipment type, 9 of them condensing unit, across 8 equipment types: 22 matched the reading shown first; and 2 serials where a seller entered a year in the listing's own year field on a government surplus listing for the serial (government surplus auction listings), 1 of them pallet of four HVAC units, across 2 equipment types: 2 matched the reading shown first; a seller's year is shown here for the record and is not counted toward this format's check.

Trane single-digit year (2002-2009): Checked against 3 serials whose date a recall notice published by someone other than us states (CPSC recall notice 05-104), 2-5 ton gas/electric packaged units, models YCP/YCX/YCY/YCZ. The date this tool reads first was consistent with the published window on all 3. Also read against 10 serials where a public body's own equipment schedule prints a year beside the serial (Norcross, Georgia; Salem, New Hampshire; Wayne Township, New Jersey; Winter Park, Florida; the year sits under a column headed Year on 6, in a row labelled Year Manufactured on 3, and on a line labelled YEAR on 1, 7 of which the document does not define), 7 name an equipment type, 4 of them condensing unit, across 4 equipment types: 10 matched the reading shown first. This format was also read against 1 serial on an air filtration system (CPSC recall notice 07-567): 1 matched the reading shown first. It is shown for the record and not counted toward this format's check, because the equipment is not a heating or cooling unit.

Trane letter-year (1980-2001): Checked against 2 serials whose date a recall notice published by someone other than us states (CPSC recall notice 01-507), Voyager series light commercial rooftop gas/electric units. The date this tool reads first was consistent with the published window on all 2. Also read against 2 serials where a public body's own equipment schedule prints a year beside the serial (Winter Park, Florida; Norcross, Georgia; the year sits under a column headed Year, which the document does not define), 1 of them condensing unit - heat pump, across 2 equipment types: 2 matched the reading shown first; and 1 serial where a seller entered a year in the listing's own year field on a government surplus listing for the serial (government surplus auction listings), XE1100 3-ton unit: 1 matched the reading shown first; a seller's year is shown here for the record and is not counted toward this format's check.

Across the American Standard formats on this page, 7 serials with a date published outside this tool produced no reading at all (Winter Park, Florida; Wayne Township, New Jersey; government surplus auction listings). A serial this tool reads nothing from is neither an agreement nor a disagreement, so it is counted in neither.

What refrigerant does an American Standard unit use?

By manufacture year: through 2005: R-22; 2006 to 2009: R-22 or R-410A; 2010 to 2024: R-410A; 2025 and later: R-454B. The refrigerant printed on the nameplate is authoritative; the year-based mapping tells you what is typical for the age, not what is in a specific unit.

Is my American Standard unit still under warranty?

Trane and American Standard certificate GW-658-0119, for products made from January 1, 2017 (held here as text), extends its base terms on the products its tables list, up to ten years on parts and, on some series (outdoor 4TTX, 4TTV, 4TWX, 4TWV, 4A6H7, 4A6V, 4A7A7 and 4A7V, and packaged 4WCZ6, 4DCZ6 and 4YCZ6), twelve on the compressor, when the product is registered online within sixty days after the commencement date. Why do some American Standard serial numbers refuse to decode?

A nine-character Trane serial with a letter as its fourth character is not in the layout Trane's own date code page prints, where that character is the day of the week, a digit, so no date is read from it. Trane's page covers its residential and light commercial products; this tool holds no Trane serial chart for chillers or other applied equipment. Read the manufacture date off the data plate. In the year table Trane's own date code page prints for its residential and light commercial products and compressors, no year is printed for a first letter I, Q or V, and every letter that table does print, from O or A for 1980 to Z for 2001, is read by this tool. The same page has a separate table for Ducane oil and horizontal gas furnaces with letters of its own, including Q for 1984, which this tool does not read. Verify with the ANSI rating year printed on the data plate.

How old is my American Standard furnace?

Trane's own Equipment Date Identification page dates the serial numbers "on all Trane central air conditioning and heating products"; it names gas furnaces only in its notes on dedicated horizontal gas furnaces. Enter the furnace's serial above: the result gives the date and age and says which document covers it, and that it covers furnaces by its scope. Trane's page reads a gas furnace built only for horizontal installation on a separate year column, so a serial opening with L, M, N, 85 to 89 or 9 is not called a furnace's age; on any other American Standard furnace the page's own rule gives the date.
