Where the abridged method cannot price something, it says so by name rather than folding it into the number.
What this computes, and what it does not
Worksheet A fixes the design conditions and the temperature differences from the station. Worksheet D prices opaque panels, Worksheet E prices infiltration, the Table 3 procedure prices windows and glass doors, and Manual J Figure 3-1 supplies the internal gain from occupants and appliances. Each arrives as its own line with its own citation.
Duct loads are computed when the duct system is described: the abridged edition's four printed scenarios are transcribed and the adjustment multiplies the rest of the heating load rather than adding to it. What is not transcribed is the FULL Table 7 library, 38 printed pages (folios 365 to 402) of grids, so a system outside those four printed arrangements is refused by name rather than fitted to the nearest one. Skylights, external sun screens, glass that is not clear, NFRC-rated products and several construction numbers are named absences too. On a run where no duct term was priced and runs do pass through an unconditioned attic, crawlspace or garage, the true load is higher than every figure reported on that run.
Where the numbers come from
The design conditions are the ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals 2021, Chapter 14, climatic design conditions. ACCA Manual J 8th Edition supplies the load procedure these numbers are used in, not the numbers themselves. The ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals prints 541 weather stations across 50 states, and this build carries all 541 of them, across all 50 states.
The ZIP is resolved through the US Census Bureau 2020 Gazetteer Files, ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTA5), accessed 2026-08-08, which publishes an internal point per ZIP Code Tabulation Area. The Census INTPTLAT / INTPTLONG internal point: a point guaranteed to lie inside the ZIP Code Tabulation Area. A ZCTA is a tabulation area built from census blocks to approximate a ZIP code, so this is neither the ZIP's geometric centre nor a postal address. Some ZIP codes have no ZCTA at all, including point codes and PO-box-only codes. A ZIP with no ZCTA is refused by name rather than mapped to a neighbouring area.
What this is not
This is not an ACCA-approved Manual J and it does not replace a permit-grade load calculation. Permits and rebate programmes commonly require an approved or permit-grade calculation, and what they accept differs by jurisdiction and programme. This page follows the abridged MJ8AE method and is not intended to satisfy them. What it is for is the work before that: sizing a replacement on the truck, checking a load before you quote it, and seeing which inputs actually move the number so you know where to spend your measuring time.

Is there a whole-house total?
A whole-house HEATING total, yes, once you describe the envelope and answer four questions about the site, and a whole-house COOLING load as a sensible and latent PAIR once you answer two more and give the Table 1A daily-range class for your site. Manual J section 4-11 makes the total heating load the sum of seven terms, and four of them go to zero under conditions the book prints: no duct system or all ducts inside the heated space, no mechanical ventilation, no winter humidifier, no piping outside the heated space. Section 5-11 prints a different list for cooling, with seven sensible terms and four latent ones, and it does not contain humidification or piping at all. Each blocker is a question about your house or your equipment rather than a calculation, so this page asks them, shows your answers beside the total, and withholds a total if any is unanswered or if your answer is one Manual J does not zero. It reports a whole-house COOLING load as the PAIR Manual J section 5-12 sizes equipment from: the total sensible load (Form J1ae line 20) and the total latent load (line 21). Either is withheld when a printed term of it is unanswered or has no printed route in the abridged edition, and the specific term is named on the result rather than folded in. The AED excursion adjustment is NOT one of the blockers: Manual J Appendix 3 section A3-2 (printed folio 421) prints that for MJ8AE the excursion adjustment is always zero, so it is not one of the reasons. Manual J section 5-12 (printed folio 40): "The total sensible and total latent load shall be used for equipment sizing (exactly as they appear on Form J1AE or Form J1) with no 'safety-factor' adjustment." Both halves are needed to select equipment, and a sensible figure on its own is not the cooling load.
Where do the design temperatures come from?
They are the ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals 2021 Chapter 14 climatic design conditions, read from the printed pages of that book. ACCA Manual J supplies the load procedure this calculator follows; it is not where these temperatures come from. Your ZIP is resolved to its Census ZIP Code Tabulation Area internal point, and the nearest transcribed station to that point is used, with the distance shown. The book prints 541 stations across 50 states; 541 are transcribed here and 0 are not. If the nearest station is further from you than any station in the table is from its own nearest neighbour, the calculator stops and says so rather than substituting a station from somewhere else.
Is this an ACCA-approved Manual J?
No. This is not an ACCA-approved Manual J and it does not replace a permit-grade load calculation. It follows the Form J1 worksheet procedure and cites the printed clause behind each figure, and it names the terms it does not compute, but several of those terms are ones a permit-grade calculation must include. Use it to understand and sanity-check a load, not to satisfy a building department.
Why does it refuse instead of estimating?
Because a substituted number is indistinguishable from a correct one once it reaches a result. Every figure downstream of the design conditions is a function of them, so a nearby-instead-of-real station produces a whole load calculation that is confidently wrong and fully traceable to the wrong place. The same rule applies inside the calculation: a window assembly the printed tables do not describe, a skylight, an external sun screen, glass that is not clear, a site latitude outside the printed span. Each of those is named and left out rather than approximated.
Why does the window section not have a double pane low-e option?
Because Manual J Table 3A-1 prints ONE column headed "Triple Pane or Double Pane Low-e", covering two different assemblies, and this interface selects a column by pane count. There is no honest way to say "double pane, low-e" through that interface, and it is the most common modern residential window. It is absent and named rather than routed to the nearest-looking column.

How accurate is the latitude adjustment?
Manual J Table 3D-2 prints Peak Solar Factors at six discrete latitudes and gives no rule for interpolating between them, and no transcribed ASHRAE station sits exactly on one of those latitudes. So between the printed columns the factor is interpolated linearly, which the manual does not license, and every answer that uses it says so and quotes the measured worst-case error for that exposure. That error figure is a conservative proxy rather than a proven bound: it is the worst held-out column, measured across a span wider than any real interpolation, so the true error at your latitude is expected to be smaller. It is measured at the printed columns themselves, so it is not proof of a limit on the error part-way between two of them. Outside the printed span the calculator refuses, because that would be extrapolation and its error cannot be bounded from the printed table.
