NEC Article 625 EV Charging
What Size Wire for a 60 Amp EV Charger?
The breaker, copper and aluminum wire, and ground for a 60A (14.4 kW) Level 2 charger, sized for the 125% continuous load per NEC Article 625, with the parts list and the interactive calculator.
60 Amp EV Charger Circuit Spec
| Charger output (continuous) | 60A |
| Design load (125%) | 75A |
| Breaker (double-pole) | 80A |
| Copper wire (75°C) | #4 |
| Aluminum wire (75°C) | #2 |
| NM-B / 60°C copper | #3 |
| Equipment ground (Cu) | #8 |
Wire at the 75°C column of NEC Table 310.16 (EV chargers and breakers are 75°C-rated equipment). NM-B cable is limited to the 60°C column per NEC 334.80. Continuous-load sizing per NEC 625.41 / 210.20(A); ground per NEC 250.122. Check voltage drop on long runs.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size wire do I need for a 60 amp EV charger?
A 60A EV charger needs #4 copper or #2 aluminum conductors on a 80A breaker. EV charging is a continuous load, so the circuit is sized at 125% of the charger's output (60 × 1.25 = 75A, rounded up to a 80A standard breaker per NEC 625.41 and 210.20(A)). The wire is sized at the 75°C column of NEC Table 310.16, which applies because EV chargers and breakers are 75°C-rated equipment. The equipment grounding conductor is #8 copper per NEC Table 250.122. If the run uses NM-B cable (Romex), the 60°C column applies (NEC 110.14(C)(1)(a), 334.80), so use #3 copper instead.
What size breaker for a 60 amp EV charger?
A 80A double-pole breaker. Because EVSE is a continuous load, NEC 625.41 requires the overcurrent device to be rated at least 125% of the charger's output: 60 × 1.25 = 75A, and the next standard breaker size is 80A.
Does a 60 amp EV charger need a dedicated circuit?
Yes. A 60A Level 2 charger, whether hardwired or plug-in, must be on its own dedicated branch circuit that serves no other load (NEC 625.40). A plug-in unit on a NEMA receptacle also needs GFCI protection at the breaker (NEC 625.54); most hardwired units have built-in CCID/GFCI and do not.
How far can I run the wire for a 60 amp EV charger?
#4 copper carries a 80A circuit at ampacity, but on long runs voltage drop, not ampacity, sets the limit. Past roughly 100 feet you may need to upsize one gauge to stay within the 3% drop recommendation. Enter your exact distance in the calculator below to check.
