What Size Breaker for a Mini Split?
A ductless mini split is sized from the outdoor unit's nameplate, not its BTU. Here is how to read the max breaker and MCA, why the number is smaller than you expect, and the calculator that sizes the exact circuit.
The Breaker Comes From the MOP, the Wire From the MCA
The outdoor condenser's data plate carries two numbers that fix the circuit. The MOP (maximum overcurrent protection, often labeled “Max Fuse/Ckt Bkr” or “Max Breaker”) caps the breaker: install the largest standard size at or below it (NEC 240.6(A), 440.22), and never larger. The MCA (minimum circuit ampacity) sizes the conductor: pick the smallest copper whose 75°C ampacity in NEC Table 310.16 meets the MCA. The MCA already includes the 125% factor on the compressor (NEC 440.32/440.33), so you do not add another 25% for continuous load. Because the compressor is inverter-driven, that MCA is often surprisingly low, which is why a big-sounding mini split can live on a modest breaker.
NEC Code Minimum vs the Manufacturer's Requirement
The bare NEC minimum wire only has to carry the MCA, so it is often smaller than what the installation manual specifies. Many manufacturers call for a larger conductor for the breaker size and for voltage-drop margin on a 208-230V run. When they differ, the manufacturer's larger requirement governs the install (NEC 110.3(B)). Size to the MCA to find the code minimum, then step up to the manual's value if it is larger. Never step down below the manual.
A Real Nameplate, Worked
A 36,000 BTU (3 ton) MrCool DIY 4th Gen prints MCA 28A and MOP 35A on its outdoor nameplate (208-230V). Run those through the method: the 35A MOP is already a standard size, so the breaker is a 35A double-pole (NEC 240.6(A) / 440.22). The 28A MCA sizes the wire to a NEC code minimum of #10 Cu (Table 310.16, 75°C), but MrCool's manual requires #8 Cu, so #8 is what you install (NEC 110.3(B)). What size breaker does a mini split need?
Size the breaker to the outdoor unit's nameplate MOP (maximum overcurrent protection, sometimes printed as "Max Fuse/Ckt Bkr"), not to the BTU. Use the largest standard breaker at or below that MOP per NEC 240.6(A) and 440.22, and never above it. Because mini splits are inverter-driven, that MOP often lands on a modest standard breaker even on a large-BTU unit. The one number that sets your breaker is on the data plate, so read it there rather than guessing from the cooling capacity.
How do I find the breaker size for my mini split?
Look on the outdoor condenser's nameplate for two figures. The MCA (minimum circuit ampacity) sizes the wire, and the MOP or "maximum fuse/breaker" sizes the overcurrent device. Match the breaker to the MOP and the copper to the MCA at the 75°C column of NEC Table 310.16. If the plate lists a fuse size only, fuses are required (NEC 110.3(B)). Why is the breaker so small for such a big BTU number?
Because a modern mini split uses an inverter compressor, which draws far less current than an old single-stage condenser of the same tonnage. The nameplate MCA and MOP already reflect that low draw, so a unit with a large cooling rating can land on a modest breaker. Always size to the nameplate MCA and MOP, never to the tonnage or BTU: the plate is what the manufacturer and the NEC both point to.
Can the mini split breaker be bigger than the wire ampacity?
Yes, and for air-conditioning equipment that is correct. NEC 240.4(G) exempts A/C branch circuits from the normal small-conductor rule, so the breaker (sized to the nameplate MOP) can exceed the conductor's ampacity. The breaker only clears short circuits and ground faults there; the compressor's own overload protection guards the wire per NEC 440.52, verified by the equipment listing. Size the wire to the MCA and the breaker to the MOP even when the breaker number is the larger of the two.
Does a mini split need its own breaker and disconnect?
Yes. A mini split must be on its own dedicated branch circuit, never shared with another load, and a disconnecting means has to be within sight of the outdoor condenser (NEC 440.14), which is the pull-out disconnect box mounted beside it. The manufacturer's instructions govern the exact wire and breaker (NEC 110.3(B)), so where the manual calls for a larger wire than the bare NEC minimum, install the larger one. The small interconnect cable between the indoor and outdoor units is separate from this branch circuit.
